This page exists so there is no ambiguity anywhere on this site about what the calculators are and are not.
Estimates, never measurements
The tools on this site apply the Widmark formula with published population ranges. They estimate; they do not measure. Actual blood alcohol concentration can only be measured by a blood test, or estimated closely by a properly calibrated breathalyzer. Individual results can fall outside every range this site shows. The formula, its assumptions, and its error sources are documented on the methodology page.
Driving
Never drive after drinking. If you are wondering whether you are sober enough to drive, the answer is no.
No output of this site, including any statement that you are "probably sober," is a statement that it is safe or lawful for you to drive. Impairment can persist after blood alcohol reaches zero, and legal limits vary by jurisdiction and license type.
Not medical advice
Nothing here is medical advice. Alcohol interacts with medications and medical conditions in ways no calculator models. Someone who is confused, breathing slowly or irregularly, cold and clammy, or cannot be woken needs emergency services immediately: 911 in the US, 112 in Europe.
If drinking is a concern
If you or someone close to you is worried about drinking itself, free and confidential help exists: in the US, the SAMHSA national helpline at 1-800-662-4357; in the Netherlands, the Alcohol infolijn at 088-505 1220. Neither organisation is affiliated with this site.
