Blood alcohol concentration is the fraction of your blood that is alcohol: 0.08 percent means 0.08 grams in every 100 millilitres. It is the number legal limits are written in, the number breathalyzers try to measure, and the number every drink calculator on the internet is estimating whether it says so or not. This one estimates where yours is at this moment. For the morning-after version of the same question, the sober-up estimator works forward from your last drink to when you are likely back at zero.
What a BAC calculator actually does
Every serious blood alcohol calculator, including this one, runs the Widmark equation, published in 1932 and still the basis of forensic alcohol estimation today. It has two halves. The first spreads the alcohol you drank through the water in your body; the second subtracts what your liver has already removed.
The formula

- the distribution ratio: how much of you is water that alcohol can dissolve into. Published values run about 0.6 to 0.76 for men and 0.49 to 0.61 for women.3

- the elimination rate: 0.012 to 0.02 percentage points of BAC per hour, averaging about 0.015.2
- t
- hours since your last drink.
That is the whole model. Notice what is not in it: your tolerance, your mood, what you ate, how much you slept, or how drunk you feel. Those things change how alcohol affects you; they barely touch the arithmetic of how much is in your blood. The full methodology, with every assumption named, sets out where each figure comes from.
Why this one answers with a range
Two of the four inputs are not measurements of you. They are population intervals, and the research reports them that way on purpose.3 Feeding intervals into a formula produces an interval out. Take 4 standard drinks in a 70 kg woman: the peak estimate runs from 0.13 to 0.16%, and the time to reach zero from 6.6 to 13.6 hours. Same night, same body, same equation.
A calculator that prints one number for that night has not done better science. It has picked the middle of the band and thrown away the information that would have told you how wrong it might be. That matters most exactly where people use these tools: a point estimate of 0.07 reads as "under the limit" when the honest answer was "somewhere between 0.06 and 0.09, and this tool cannot tell which".
So the number above is always two numbers, the high edge is the one to plan around, and the width between them is the estimate telling you how much it does not know. How accurate BAC calculators actually are puts numbers on each source of error, including the one that turns out to be larger than the formula's own.

These are arithmetic worst cases: they assume every drink is already in the blood and nothing has been cleared yet. Spread the same drinks across an evening and the real peak is lower, which is what the optional "when did you start" field in the calculator accounts for. Nobody's actual peak is knowable from a table. The full BAC chart covers more weights and lets you subtract the hours since your last drink.
Legal limits, and what they are not

Limits vary by country, by state, by vehicle class, and by how long you have held a licence, so check the one where you actually are. More importantly, none of them marks a line between impaired and unimpaired. Measurable loss of reaction time, tracking, and self-assessment starts around 0.02 to 0.05, below every limit in the table.5 A limit is the point at which the law stops arguing about it.
Which is why this calculator will tell you when an estimate is still above a limit, and will never tell you that you are below one and therefore fine. It cannot know the first thing, and the second does not follow from it. The driving question gets its own page, and its answer does not depend on a number.
Never drive after drinking. If you are wondering whether you are sober enough to drive, the answer is no.
What the formula cannot know
- What was actually in the glass. Free-poured spirits and craft beer at 8 percent routinely make a "drink" worth one and a half. Miscounting the input is the largest error in most estimates, and it dwarfs the formula's own. Convert an odd pour here.
- Your stomach. Food slows absorption and lowers the peak, sometimes substantially, but it does not change the total alcohol your liver has to clear.
- The absorption window. BAC keeps climbing for 30 to 90 minutes after the last drink. Any estimate taken inside that window is describing where you are heading, not where you are.
- Your body composition. The distribution ratio assumes a typical proportion of water to fat for your sex. Very lean or very heavy bodies sit outside that assumption in opposite directions.
- Your liver. Elimination rate varies with genetics, regular drinking, liver disease, age, and some medications.4 Heavy drinkers clear alcohol faster, which lowers BAC without lowering the risk of anything else.
- How drunk you feel. Tolerance changes the feeling and not the blood. Two people at the same BAC can look entirely different and perform identically badly on a reaction-time test.

Frequently asked questions
How is BAC calculated?
Almost every BAC calculator uses the Widmark equation. Take the grams of pure alcohol you drank, divide by your body weight multiplied by a distribution ratio that represents how much of you is water, and subtract the alcohol your liver has cleared since: roughly 0.015 percentage points per hour. In symbols, BAC = A / (r × W) − β × t. The inputs are drinks, weight, sex, and time, which is why every calculator asks for those four things and no more.
How accurate are BAC calculators?
Not accurate enough to act on. The two constants in the formula vary widely between people: the distribution ratio runs from about 0.49 to 0.76 across healthy adults and the elimination rate from 0.012 to 0.020 percentage points per hour. Propagated honestly, that puts the edges of a BAC estimate roughly 25 percent apart, and the edges of a sober-by time a factor of two apart. On top of that the formula cannot know your stomach contents, your liver, your medications, or what the bar actually poured. A calculator that answers with a single number has not solved that spread; it has hidden it.
How many drinks does it take to reach 0.08?
For many adults, three to four US standard drinks over a couple of hours will do it, and for a smaller person two can be enough. But the honest answer is a range rather than a count: at 60 kg, three standard drinks put a woman’s estimate somewhere around 0.11 to 0.14 percent, while in a 100 kg man the same three drinks land near 0.06 to 0.07. Body size, sex, timing, and how quickly you drank all move it, which is exactly why counting drinks is a poor way to judge whether you are over a limit.
How long does it take for BAC to go back to zero?
Your liver clears alcohol at a near-constant rate of roughly 0.015 percentage points of BAC per hour, close to one US standard drink per hour, with a published range of 0.012 to 0.020. Four standard drinks in a 70 kg woman peak somewhere around 0.13 to 0.16 percent and take roughly 7 to 14 hours from the last drink to reach zero. Nothing shortens that: the rate is set by enzymes, not by effort.
How long does it take for BAC to get back to zero?
Take your estimated peak and divide by the elimination rate. At the average 0.015 percentage points per hour, a peak of 0.12 takes about eight hours to reach zero from the last drink, and the honest range across the published rates of 0.012 to 0.020 puts it somewhere between six and ten. The calculator above does this for your own night and shows the time to zero as a window rather than a single clock time. Nothing shortens it, and the count starts at your last drink rather than at bedtime.
Does food, water, or coffee lower your BAC?
Food eaten before or while drinking slows absorption and lowers the peak, which is real and worth doing. Nothing lowers BAC once the alcohol is in your blood. Water helps the hangover and not the number, coffee makes you an alert person with the same blood alcohol, and cold showers make you a cold one. Only time removes alcohol, at a rate you do not control.
Can a BAC calculator tell me whether I am safe to drive?
No, and neither can any other calculator. An estimate built from population averages cannot measure your blood, the margin of error straddles the legal limit for most realistic nights, and impairment of reaction time and judgment is measurable well below every legal limit in the world. Never drive after drinking. If you are wondering whether you are sober enough to drive, the answer is no.
Why does this calculator show a range instead of one number?
Because the underlying science is a range. The Widmark equation needs two constants that differ from person to person, and published research gives both as intervals rather than values. Propagating those intervals honestly produces a band, and the width of that band is the most useful thing on the screen: it tells you how much the estimate could be wrong by. The high edge is the one to plan around.
Is blood alcohol content the same as promille?
It is the same measurement in a different unit. The US writes BAC as a percentage by weight, so 0.08 percent means 0.08 grams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. Continental Europe uses promille, grams per litre, which is exactly ten times the US figure: the Dutch limit of 0.5 promille is a BAC of 0.05. The UK quotes milligrams per 100 millilitres, so its 80 mg limit is again 0.08.
