How accurate are BAC calculators?
Not accurate enough to act on, and it is possible to say by how much. Run one ordinary night through the published ranges — four US standard drinks in a 70 kg woman — and the honest answer for peak blood alcohol is 0.13 to 0.16%. The estimate of when she is back to zero runs from 6.6 to 13.6 hours, a spread of more than 2.1×.
That is not this calculator being unusually humble. It is what the arithmetic produces when the published intervals are carried through honestly instead of averaged away.
The biggest error is not the formula
This is the part almost nobody writes down. For that same night, the entire spread contributed by the formula's two uncertain constants is 0.032 of BAC. Miscounting the night by a single drink moves the estimate by 0.037.
One forgotten drink outweighs everything the science is unsure about. And drink counting is where real nights go wrong: a US pint of 5% lager is 1.3 standard drinks, while the same glass of an 8% IPA is 2.1. Four of them is the difference between 5.3 and 8.5 standard drinks, from a night anyone would describe as "four beers".
So the most productive thing you can do for accuracy has nothing to do with choosing a better calculator. Convert what was actually in the glass and feed that in.

What "the most accurate BAC calculator" actually means
It is a strange thing to shop for, because there is no hidden better formula. Every serious calculator runs Widmark on the same published constants, so they cannot differ much in accuracy — only in which point inside each range they quietly picked, and in whether they admit to having picked one.
That is why a calculator printing 0.078 is not more accurate than one printing 0.06 to 0.09. It is the same estimate with the uncertainty deleted, and deleting it is the only step that changed. The number looks authoritative precisely in proportion to how much information was thrown away to produce it.
So the useful question is not which calculator is most accurate. It is which one tells you how wrong it might be — because the width of the answer is the part you need in order to make a decision with it. On this site that width is the headline, the conservative edge is what the copy plans around, and every assumption is written down.
What is more accurate than a calculator
In order: a blood test measures, an evidential breath instrument measures closely, a decent personal fuel-cell breathalyzer estimates well, a formula estimates roughly, and how you feel barely counts as evidence.5 The gaps between those rungs are large, and this site lives on the fourth one and says so on every result.
None of them measures impairment, which is the thing that actually matters and which no consumer device reads at all. Reaction time and judgment are measurably worse below every legal limit in the world, so even a correct number is not a verdict.
Never drive after drinking. If you are wondering whether you are sober enough to drive, the answer is no.
How to make your estimate less wrong
- Count in standard drinks, not glasses. This is the single biggest lever, worth more than every other item here combined.
- Enter how long you were drinking. Without it the model assumes every drink landed at once, which overstates the peak for a long evening.
- Wait out the absorption window. An estimate taken within an hour of the last drink is describing where you are heading, not where you are.
- Plan around the high edge. The range is not a spread of equally useful numbers; only one end is the cautious one.
- Treat the result as an estimate of a quantity, not a decision. The number cannot clear you to drive, work, or operate anything, and neither can any other number on the internet.

Those are all defensible choices and they produce visibly different numbers from identical inputs. The disagreement between calculators is not a sign that one is right; it is the underlying uncertainty becoming visible.
How accurate is a breathalyzer compared to a calculator?
Far more accurate, because it measures your breath rather than estimating from averages. A fuel-cell breathalyzer of the kind used by police is close enough to blood alcohol to support prosecution; cheaper semiconductor units drift with temperature, age, and calibration, and can be well out. Even a good breathalyzer measures blood alcohol rather than impairment, and impairment is the thing that actually matters.
Can a BAC calculator be used as evidence?
No. Courts work from blood or evidential breath testing, performed on calibrated instruments with a documented chain of custody. A website estimate has no standing anywhere, in either direction: it cannot demonstrate that you were under a limit, and nothing on this site should be treated as a record of anything.
Does the Widmark formula overestimate or underestimate?
Both, depending on which of its assumptions your night breaks. It overestimates when you drank over a long evening, because the simple form credits no elimination during the session. It underestimates when you drank quickly on an empty stomach, or when the drinks were larger or stronger than counted. This site defaults to the cautious direction and lets you enter your session length to correct the first case.
What is the most accurate way to know my BAC?
A blood test, then an evidential-grade breath test, then a decent personal fuel-cell breathalyzer, then a calculator, then how you feel.
